What the demo shows, step by step
Up & About is a twice-daily check-in app in development for people who live alone and the people who would want to know if something were wrong. The demo above runs the app’s three key moments on a simulated Android phone, so you can see what a check-in app looks like before anything is installed. Everyone in it is fictional, and everything you tap stays in your browser.

Ready to check in: Margaret’s morning
Margaret has chosen a morning window of 7:00 to 10:00 AM and an evening window of 6:00 to 9:00 PM. When a window opens, her Today screen shows one large “I’m okay” button, how long the window has left, when her evening reminder will arrive and the three people in her circle. Circle, Activity and Settings sit along the bottom; Settings lets you change both windows and the two reminders, which arrive 30 and 10 minutes before a window closes.

Checked in: one tap, then done
Tapping “I’m okay” completes the morning check-in. Margaret sees a confirmation, and her circle — her daughter Sarah, her neighbour Tom and her sister Joan — can see that she checked in at 8:12 AM. Nobody gets a message to answer and nobody needs to phone. The Activity screen keeps a plain record of each check-in and when it happened, and nothing more.

Missed check-in: the alert Sarah receives
If 10:00 AM passes without a tap, the whole circle is alerted together rather than one person at a time. The demo switches to Sarah’s view: when Margaret last checked in, her address, and the access note Margaret agreed to share only in an alert — the spare key is with Tom at number 12. Sarah can call her mother, or tap “I’m going round” so Tom and Joan know someone is already on the way.
What the demo does not do
It does not install anything, create an account, save your choices, send a text or place a call — the call and emergency buttons show a preview and stop there. Up & About itself is not an emergency service: it cannot detect a fall or a medical event, and anyone who may be in immediate danger needs local emergency services, not an app. The safety statement sets out the full boundaries.
Where to next
